LONDON (AP) ? Britain's information watchdog has ordered a city council to stop recording people's conversations in taxis.
Information Commissioner Christopher Graham said Wednesday that Southampton City Council in southern England had "gone too far" in its desire to ensure people's safety and that most people would expect more privacy in the back of a taxi.
Graham said CCTV cameras can still be used in cabs, but that the recording of conversations must stop.
Southampton City Council said it was considering an appeal of the order.
Britain has hundreds of thousands of surveillance cameras in public places, including many trains, subways and buses. But Southampton's use of audio recorders in licensed taxi cabs has outraged civil liberties campaigners.
