Roma refugees in Montenegro lose homes in fire

PODGORICA, Montenegro (AP) ? Hundreds of Roma refugees from Kosovo are living in tents after a fire burned down their settlement on the outskirts of the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica.

Officials said Wednesday some 850 people lost their belongings in the fire that swept through their barracks in the suburb of Konik. No one was injured in Tuesday's fire.

Emergency official Radomir Scepanovic says it is unclear what caused the fire. He says it spread quickly because of strong winds that engulfed the settlement.

Selija Hisenaj, a 30-year-old mother of seven who fled Kosovo during the 1998-99 war, says she lost everything. Hisenaj says that "we should have stayed to burn as well."

Thousands of Roma, known as gypsies, were displaced during the 1990s Balkan conflicts. Many live in make-shift settlements and face harassment.
