Invoxia unveils the AudiOffice, a $299 speaker dock for iDevices

The last time we heard from Invoxia, the company was showing off a desktop VoIP phone with iPad and iPhone docks, allowing you to use the familiar iOS interface to manipulate all the phone's controls -- mute, volume, speakerphone, et cetera. As Mobile World Congress kicks off, the company's back with a product that looks very similar, but does quite the opposite. Designed for business use, the AudiOffice isn't a standalone VoIP phone but rather, a speaker dock for your iDevices. Here, your sweet telephony comes courtesy of your iPhone, while Invoxia's hardware is mainly there to enhance the call quality, with the help of four wide-bandwidth speakers and two digital microphones. And though those docks were built with the iPad and iPhone in mind, you could, if you were so inclined, connect another device using the dock's USB socket or Bluetooth 2.1 radio. In addition to FaceTime, too, you can place calls through more OS-agnostic apps, such as Skype. The AudiOffice will sell for $299 -- quite pricey for what's essentially an iDevice dock -- but that's still far more affordable than the $599 the NVX 610 is fetching. We'll be back with hands-on photos soon enough, but in the meantime we've got pictures of the official sort below.

    Happy Endings Webisode Series

Happy Endings fans have I got a fabulous treat for you, webisodes. Yes you read it right so very special web only episodes. Starting Wednesday February 29th the Subaru Happy Endings webisode series will begin online at ABC.com. I so love it when there are special webisdoe series of my favorite shows and this one has quite the interesting twist. You can see the entire plot of the special online only episodes below. Penny announces to the group that her mom is getting rid of her first car. She tells them that her car is in a storage unit that her mom?s third husband has stopped paying for. The storage locker is going to be auctioned off on an episode of a storage wars-esque reality show. It?s an old truck (or an older Subaru) that she inherited from her third stepdad. The group feigns excitement about the news. They say that the car represented their young adulthood as they each had defining moments of their youth in that car. As I am sure you can figure out from the above description each different webisdoe will consist of one of the groups experience with the car via a flashback. I have [...]

DETROIT (AP) ? Days before a pivotal primary, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Friday he would raise the eligibility age for Medicare as he looks to show he's willing to curtail government benefits in the long run.

It was a new detail in a major campaign speech that was otherwise short on new policy ideas. Romney delivered the speech to the Detroit Economic Club at the cavernous and largely empty Ford Field, where the Detroit Lions play football.

"With these commonsense changes, we will have fixed our balance sheet," Romney told the crowd of about 1200, who occupied just a portion of the field itself as tens of thousands of stadium seats sat empty.

Romney walked through much of the economic plan he had already unveiled Wednesday ahead of a GOP debate. He's proposing 20 percent cuts to the marginal individual tax rates. He also wants to lower corporate tax rates to 25 percent from 35 percent. On Friday, he said he wants to raise Medicare eligibility age by one month per year and eventually tie the age to life expectancy.

Romney's campaign rests on a foundation of economic know-how, and he presents himself as a lifelong businessman who has the skills to put an end to the worst recession in decades.

With the speech, he was looking to draw contrasts with Democratic President Barack Obama. Romney paints Obama as looking to create an "entitlement society" where the former Massachusetts governor claims he wants an "opportunity society."

But Romney is facing an unexpectedly tough challenge from GOP rival Rick Santorum in his native state of Michigan. Santorum won contests in Colorado, Missouri and Minnesota on Feb. 8 and rose in polls afterward.

Santorum has been emphasizing his blue collar roots and looking to appeal to tea party and socially conservative voters in Michigan. Opinion polls show voters aligned with the tea party are more likely to support Santorum than Romney.

Romney has tried to cut into that support, courting tea party voters in suburban Detroit on Thursday night with an indictment of President Barack Obama as a man who is "comfortable living with trillion-dollar deficits." The former Massachusetts governor went out of his way to praise them as part of his courtship.

"I appreciate the work you're doing. I appreciate your willingness to get out of your homes," he said Thursday.

But his speech Friday served to highlight his support among wealthy voters ? and his family's own personal wealth. The crowd was formally dressed and offered polite applause as Romney said he planned to lower all tax rates but make sure the wealthiest Americans still shoulder the same percentage of the burden.

When he referenced "higher income" taxpayers, he pointed at the crowd.

Then, as he closed his remarks, he pointed out that his wife, Ann, drives "a couple of Cadillacs." Ann Romney has two Cadillac SRX cars, one in Massachusetts and one in California, a spokesman said.

In his speech, Romney stayed entirely away from the social issues that have helped propel Santorum's rise.

Backed by ads attacking Santorum from his own campaign and from Restore Our Future, an outside group that supports him, Romney has made evident gains in the past week in Michigan. But numerous polls show that Republicans who say they support one of the candidates could change their mind, and surveys also suggest that the state is divided along geographical regions.

Romney outruns Santorum in the Detroit area, but the situation is reversed in much of the rest of the state, in some surveys.

That creates the possibility of something of a split decision next Tuesday in which Romney wins the popular vote but Santorum emerges with more delegates. Most of them are awarded, two at a time, to the winner of each of the state's 14 congressional districts.

In all there are 30 delegates at stake in Michigan next week, and 29 in winner-take-all Arizona.

Whole Foods up, Wal-Mart down in satisfaction survey

    Getty Images file

Whole Foods saw customer satisfaction increase in the past year, according to a new survey.

    By Allison Linn

We?ve been hearing a lot of potentially positive news about the economy lately, and that may be trickling down to the grocery store level.

A new survey finds that even though food prices are going up, Americans are more satisfied than they were a year ago with upscale grocer Whole Foods and less satisfied with discount giant Wal-Mart.

The American Customer Satisfaction Index, an ongoing study of people?s shopping preferences, said Whole Foods? customer satisfaction rose slightly in the past year, continuing an upward trend. It?s the nation's second most beloved major grocery, after Publix.

Wal-Mart, on other hand, saw customer satisfaction fall. It?s the least popular of the major grocers in the survey.

David VanAmburg, managing director of the ACSI, said that in general people tend to favor quality over price ? except when we experience a downturn as?we did with the Great Recession.

?When the economy tanks, people are thinking more about, ?How can I stretch my dollar as much as possible??? VanAmburg said.

As the tepid recovery has picked up steam,?shoppers appear to be?starting to look again at?factors such as store?cleanliness, checkout lines and quality of produce,?VanAmburg said.

?Things have improved enough that customers are looking more for quality. They?re looking for that combination of good quality and good price,? VanAmburg said.

Consumer prices jumped in January, thanks in part to high gas prices, and food prices were up slightly. But the nation?s unemployment rate fell to 8.3 percent last month, one of a growing number of signs?that?brighter days are coming.

A separate poll from Pew Research Center found that people are more optimistic about the economy than they were even two months ago.

In periods such as this, when the economy is showing?improvement and prices are rising, upscale chains like?Whole Foods have more tools available, VanAmburg said.

The store, which some?call ?Whole Paycheck? for its high prices, can offer promotional deals or tout its private label 365 Everyday Value line, which may make people feel better about shopping there. That can build on what people already think of as a positive shopping experience, he said.

Wal-Mart, on the other hand, is largely known?for being low-cost, and that can make it harder for the chain?to?find other ways to attract customers when food prices?are rising, VanAmberg said.

Wal-Mart has said it is making a major effort to keep costs down. In its most recent earnings call in November, the company acknowledged that rising food prices are?an issue for its core customers and that?it was trying to absorb some price increases.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Sarah Spencer said she couldn?t comment specifically on the ACSI study because she hadn?t seen it. But she said the company works hard to please customers with such efforts as?helping people choose healthy foods and?sourcing more food locally.

?We survey more than half a million customers every month, and they are telling us they are pleased with their shopping experience at our stores and clubs. We continue to work to meet and succeed our customers' expectations by offering them low prices on fresh and packaged food,? she said in an email.

The American Customer Satisfaction Index?is based on interviews with about 70,000 customers annually, gauging opinions on? several?different industries.

What's the most important factor when you go grocery shopping?

U visa boosts legal status for immigrant crime victims | Boston ...

Women in Massachusetts who suffer from psychological, sexual or physical abuse often keep their pain secret. Threats of deportation compound fears among abused immigrant women, who may not know that U.S. immigration laws can protect them.

Experts say women immigrants frequently believe that reaching out for help from authorities will set off a legal status dispute ending with deportation. Abusive boyfriends and spouses use the threat to withhold or withdraw women's green card sponsorships as a method of control.

Battered women immigrants often fail to seek assistance until violence is so obvious and severe that there is no other choice. Foreign-born women frequently learn in hospital emergency rooms about the existence of the 1994 Violence Against Women Act and U visas.

Under the Violence Against Women Act, undocumented battered women are free to apply for legal status and work permits to establish economic independence. The five-year-old U visa is issued to crime victims who help police and the court system prosecute offenders. The U visa is valuable for women who have been forced to leave their children with relatives in a native country. Once the visa is issued, a woman can use the new resident status to sponsor legal immigration for her children.

It is also possible for an immigrant to come to the U.S. legally to escape abuse in a native land through the application for asylum. The asylum track to permanent residency is more difficult than the U visa for abuse victims, but it does exist.

Immigration by asylum is predominantly reserved for people who suffer for religious, social or political reasons in their homeland, but courts have accepted proven abuse as a form of persecution. For example, asylum was granted to an African woman in a 1996 case due to sexual abuse.

    Considering Musical Training

I suppose there are those who don't really give much thought to all of the benefits of listening, enjoying and creating good music. I am an advocate for the study of fine arts and I encourage any parent who wants to have a well-rounded socially savvy and spatially intelligent child to seriously consider sponsoring music lessons.

(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday brought 22 Catholic churchmen into the elite club of cardinals who will elect his successor, cementing the Italian majority in a future conclave but also giving New York's garrulous archbishop a position of prominence.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan emerged as something of the star of the consistory, delivering a highly praised speech on spreading the faith and mentioned in some Italian media as an improbable "papabile," or having the qualities of a future pope.

Traditionally Americans are ruled out as papal contenders, with the argument that the world doesn't need a superpower pope. But Dolan's joyful demeanor seemed to have struck a chord in a Vatican that has been anything but joyful over a rash of news reports about political infighting and financial mismanagement.

"He certainly is going to be given many responsibilities as a cardinal," said the other American who got a red hat Saturday, Cardinal Edwin O'Brien, the outgoing archbishop of Baltimore. Asked if he thought Dolan had the stuff to be pope, O'Brien deadpanned: "His mother thinks so."

Dolan artfully dodged the question when asked about the speculation Saturday by a gaggle of reporters who traveled from the U.S. for the ceremony: "Io non parlo inglese," he said. ("I don't speak English.")

In all, 22 churchmen got their red hats Saturday, including the archbishops of Prague, Toronto, Florence, Utrecht and Hong Kong as well as the heads of several Vatican offices.

Seven of the 22 were Italian, adding to the eight voting-age Italian cardinals named at the last consistory in November 2010. As of Saturday, Italy will have 30 cardinals out of the 125 under age 80 and thus eligible to vote in a future conclave.

That boosts Italy's chances of taking back the papacy for one of its own following decades under a Polish and a German pope ? or at least playing the kingmaker role if an Italian candidate doesn't emerge.

Only the U.S. comes close, with 12 cardinals under 80.

In remarks at the start of the service, Benedict recalled that the red color of the three-pointed hat, or biretta, and the scarlet cassock that cardinals wear, symbolizes the blood that cardinals must be willing to shed to remain faithful to the church.

"The new cardinals are entrusted with the service of love: love for God, love for his church, an absolute and unconditional love for his brothers and sisters even unto shedding their blood, if necessary," Benedict said.

It was a similar theme Dolan touched on in his keynote speech to cardinals and the pope on Friday, which was peppered with jokes, references to books, films and his own experiences as archbishop in New York, Milwaukee and as rector of the U.S. seminary in Rome.

"Holy Father, can you omit the 'shedding of your blood' when you present me with the biretta?" Dolan asked the pope. "Of course not! We are but 'scarlet audio-visual aids' for all of our brothers and sisters also called to be ready to suffer and die for Jesus."

The Vatican said the pope had given Dolan a papal thumbs up, terming his speech "enthusiastic, joyful and profound." Dolan said Benedict referred to the speech again on Saturday during the few moments they shared privately when Benedict gave him his skullcap, biretta and ring.

"He thanked me again for yesterday, which meant a lot," Dolan told reporters at a reception after the ceremony. "He did have a little trouble getting the ring on the finger, which was a little embarrassing."

Preparations for the ceremony were clouded by leaks of internal documents alleging financial mismanagement in Vatican affairs, and reports in the Italian media of political jockeying among church officials who, sensing an increasingly weak and aging pontiff, are already preparing for a conclave.

None of that was on display Saturday, however, amid the pomp of the consistory that brought to 213 the overall size of the College of Cardinals, including the four over-80 cardinals who were honored in recognition of their long service the church.

Among them was Maltese Cardinal Prosper Grech, 86, the first Maltese cardinal in 168 years. One of his claims to fame is that he heard Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini's confession hours before he was elected Pope Paul VI.

Benedict was wheeled into St. Peter's Basilica aboard the moving platform he has been using for several months to spare him the long walk down the center aisle. Benedict, who turns 85 in April, has been slowing down recently: His upcoming trip to Mexico and Cuba, for example, is very light on public appearances, with no political speeches or meetings with civil society planned as has been the norm to date.

Even Saturday's consistory was greatly trimmed back to a slimmer version of the service used in 1969: only one of the cardinals actually read his oath of loyalty aloud, while the others read it silently to themselves simultaneously rather than one after another. A reading was cut out, as was a responsorial psalm.

And at the end of his remarks, Benedict said: "And pray for me, that I may continually offer to the people of God the witness of sound doctrine and guide the holy church with a firm and humble hand."

All of which has led to even more speculation that a conclave is very much on the minds of cardinals new and old.

"It's one of the major responsibilities, and one hopes it doesn't happen too soon," O'Brien said.

The consistory class of 2012 is heavily European, reinforcing Europe's dominance of the College of Cardinals, even though two-thirds of the world's Catholics are in the southern hemisphere. Only three of the new under-80 cardinals ? a Brazilian, an Indian and a Chinese ? come from developing countries.

Hong Kong Archbishop John Tong Hon spoke Friday about the plight of the Catholic Church in China, where priests and bishops of the underground church loyal to the pope are frequently harassed by government authorities.

Dolan, who has been embroiled in the battle with the Obama administration over health care coverage and contraception, said he got a lesson in what violations of religious freedom really means in the real world.

"I'm just sitting there thinking 'Wow, with all the problems we've got at home, and with even the difficulties we have in talking about the freedom of religion, it's nothing compared to what my brother cardinals throughout the world" are dealing with, Dolan said.

"They know what this red means."
